Shahrukh Khan is arguably the world’s most successful movie star. He has fan numbers in the billions, two years ago Newsweek dubbed him one of the 50 most powerful people in the world and… most of you have never heard of him, right?
However, with Hollywood desperate to get its mitts on the lucrative Indian market, you’ll be seeing a lot more ‘Westernised’ (no big song-and- dance numbers) Bollywood movies such as this UK box office smash.
Here, Khan makes his equivalent of an Oscar bid by playing Rizwan Khan, a Muslim from Mumbai with Asperger’s syndrome. Khan moves to San Francisco where he marries a Hindu single mother, falls foul of the racist fallout from 9/11 and tries to meet George W Bush to tell him: ‘My name is Khan and I am not a terrorist.’ The script is slightly clunky but it’s impossible not to like this slick Indian take on Forrest Gump, despite its shameless tear-tugging.
Extras: Changing face of Bollywood featurette, music and story featurettes, music promos.
